There Will Be Blangst

“So, Blaine, got a girlfriend?” Blaine glanced at his short grandfather. He loved the old man, he had a great sense of humor, was always positive, and was actually shorter than Blaine.

But he’d asked Blaine that question three times now. And Blaine had only been with him for an hour. Each time he managed to simply answer ‘no’ and that had been the end of it, but it was getting harder as the family picnic went on.

“No, grandpa.” Blaine said politely, glancing around to see if anyone else was in earshot.

“Why not? Handsome boy like yourself! You should have somebody!”

“Well…” Blaine bit his lip, part of him wanted to just say it, but part of him knew it could be a horrible idea. “A-actually. I-I do.”

“Do what, son?”

“Have someone.”

“Oh yeah? I knew it! What’s her name?”

“W-well…” ‘This is it,’ he told himself, ‘do it or don’t. Don’t drag it out.’ “His name is Kurt.” Blaine blurted.

“I’m sorry?” For a second Blaine thought his grandpa wanted him to repeat it because he was angry or in disbelief. It took him a second to realize he just couldn’t hear him.

Blaine swallowed convulsivly, he just wanted to tell his grandpa but he didn’t want to risk angering him, disappointing him. He loved his grandpa so much. “His name. His name is Kurt.”

“Kurt?”

Blaine swallowed hard, “Y-yeah.”

“Well that’s great!” He cried, actually sounding pleased. “John!” He called, turning to the porch where Blaine’s dad stood. “Why didn’t you tell me Blaine had a little boyfriend?”

Blaine watched, laughing a bit to himself, both in disbelief and relief.

“Well…that was easy.”
